Preparation and Characterization of Ultra-Lightweight Foamed Concrete Incorporating Lightweight Aggregates

Preparation and Characterization of Ultra-Lightweight Foamed Concrete Incorporating Lightweight Aggregates 1Building Materials and Construction Chemistry, Technische Universität Berlin, Germany 2Structural Engineering Department, Mansoura University, Elgomhouria St., Mansoura, Egypt 3Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Sejong University, Korea 4Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture, West Pomeranian University of Technology, Poland Increasing interest is nowadays being paid to improving the thermal insulation of buildings in order to save energy and reduce ecological problems. Foamed concrete has unique characteristics and considerable potential as a promising material in construction applications. It is produced with a wide range of dry densities, between 600 and 1600 kg/m3. However, at a low density below 500 kg/m3, it tends to be unstable in its fresh state while exhibiting high drying shrinkage in its hardened state. In this study, lightweight aggrega...

Museum at the Gateway Arch St. Louis Best Project Owners Gateway Arch Park Foundation; National Park Service Design Firm Cooper Robertson Contractor McCarthy Building Cos. Inc. Civil Engineer David Mason + Associates Structural Engineer Alper Audi Inc. Mechanical, Electrical & Technology Engineer IMEG Corp. Plumbing & Fire Protection Engineer KAI Exhibit Designer Haley Sharpe Design Located at the base of Eero Saarinen’s iconic Arch, this LEED Gold, $108.9-million project renovated and expanded the half-century-old subterranean museum and visitor center and added a new west entrance. The largest public-private partnership investment ever in a national park, the project team sought to expand and improve the visitor’s center and connect the park via a walking path to St. Louis’ Old Courthouse, which had been cut off by a highway. It also had to be built without shutting down the Arch, which gets nearly 3 million visitors a year. The entrance to the expanded museum allows visitors to enter the building at ground level. A gentle slope takes them through the 46,000-sq-ft addition to the museum, which explores the role of St. Louis in westward expansion. One of the National Park Service’s requirements was that the below-grade expansion structure had to comply with Saarinen’s original berm height design. The tallest wall rises 41 ft, but most above-ground walls on the sloping entrance range from 25 ft to 35 ft tall. All of the walls slope inward from the park and had to be matched during concrete placement for final positions. Instead of using natural fill, project contractor McCarthy used lightweight geofoam to create the sloping grade that links the land bridge to the visitor center and then the Arch. In 2015, two Mississippi River floods washed away the east slope of the center’s site and part of the site of a former parking garage that was demolished for the park reconfiguration. That forced a later opening. Ryan Freeman, former vice president of operations at McCarthy, says, “We had to be able to construct the new museum and renovate the old museum while interacting with visitors and having hundreds of dump trucks coming into and out of the site every day.” Freeman adds, “We excavated 300,000 cu yd of material to dig down to the foundation wall of the existing museum.”

Feds Call For Regulation Changes One Year After Massachusetts Gas Explosions

Feds Call For Regulation Changes One Year After Massachusetts Gas Explosions Federal officials are calling for changes to national pipeline regulations a year after last year's  natural gas explosions and fires  north of Boston.  During a Sept. 24 hearing in Washington, D.C., the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)  released its final report on the causes of the Sept. 13, 2018, disaster and issued  five new safety recommendations , including calls for revising federal regulations “to require overpressure protection for low pressure natural gas distribution systems that cannot be defeated by a single operator error or equipment failure.” An erroneously over-pressurized gas line caused last September’s disaster, killing one person, sending 22 others to the hospital and damaging 131 structures in Lawrence, Andover and North Andover, according to the NTSB. MAKING A HOMEOWNERS DREAMS OF A DECK A REALITY

MAKING A HOMEOWNERS DREAMS OF A DECK A REALITY Homeowners often don’t utilize their outdoor space as well as they could. This is usually due to the lack of a deck area. Decks are ideal for entertaining or simply relaxing on a beautiful summer afternoon. Sadly, many homeowners don’t believe they can add a deck, but many obstacles are easy to overcome. UNEVEN GROUND A yard that is sloped or uneven is no longer a problem when it comes to adding a deck to a house. A first-floor deck can be kept level by using a  pedestal deck system . It would be much like a balcony that that homeowner could use for relaxing. TOO MUCH SUN Homeowners may choose not to have a deck due to the amount of sun their backyard gets each day. A quick solution to this problem is to install a retractable awning. Th...
